Quotes: Nick Vujicic in Manila

Born without arms and legs, God is using Nick Vujicic to touch people otherwise crippled by fear and hopelessness. Two days ago I was blessed to hear this amazing man live in Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Here are the snippets I managed to write down. May you be inspired and encouraged as I am. :)

  • Put your faith in action.
  • Courage means doing something even if you fail.
  • You don't need courage to win, you need courage to fail.
  • F.E.A.R. --- False Evidence Apparently Real
  • F.A.I.T.H. --- Full Assurance In The Heart (of the Truth)
  • Courage starts with purpose.
  • You can have arms and legs and not know what to do with them.
  • Try again.
  • Failure = Education. (Teci: In direct contrast to today's mainstream educational system)
  • Never give up!
  • Don't believe you're a failure:
    • Thomas Edison invented the light bulb after 10,000 tries. He didn't see himself fail 9,999 times. Instead, he just learned 9,999 ways to not make a light bulb.
    • Nick himself contacted 52 schools and got rejected before being accepted to his first speaking engagement. Now he has to say "No" to 28,000 speaking invitations.
  • The bigger the dream, the bigger the opposition.
  • Was that a failure? Yes. Was I a failure? No. Try again.
  • Obstacles = Opportunities.
  • We have storms and clouds but it's always sunny above the clouds.
  • Sometimes you may have a dream that has to die, but don't let it kill you.
  • Take steps, no matter how small, towards the right direction.
  • Be thankful: See what you've been blessed with!
  • My circumstances didn't change; my heart did.
  • If you're not happy single, you won't be happy married!
  • I'm happy today because I'm thankful for the things I do have.
  • Fame, fortune, sex, drugs, gangs, being in the cool group... Happiness is not in those things. Love is what you're looking for.
  • Life is not just about success. At the top of the mountain it could get very lonely. Build each other up in love.
  • When Nick was a boy, he wanted to see someone who was like him, with no arms and legs. Sadly, that wish was never fulfilled. But now as a speaker he once met a child with the same condition as him. The boy looked at him and knew that he himself can be happy and okay.
  • You can be a miracle to someone right now.
  • Australians helping Australians... Filipinos helping Filipinos.
  • What are the three greatest/dearest things in your life right now?
  • Who have you not forgiven yet?
  • At 19, Nick had his first speaking engagement: the first time he had compassion on a group of complete strangers, 300 teenagers.
  • A teenager asked if she could interrupt Nick's talk because she wanted to hug him. She whispered, "Nobody has ever told me that they love me. Nobody has ever told me I'm beautiful."
  • Nick got home, realizing what he wanted to do for the rest of his life: He wanted to be a speaker.
  • My parents constantly planted seeds of love and hope and truth. If parents don't do that to their children, who will?
  • You are beautiful just the way you are.
  • Life without limits... Unstoppable... Limitless
  • Unconditional love
  • Don't take any day for granted.
  • Dream big.
  • You can't buy hope.
  • Faith as first. Faith as last.

Nick Vujicic is the author of Your Life Without Limits, Unstoppable: The Incredible Power of Faith in Action, and Limitless: Devotions for a Ridiculously Good Life. He also encourages Christians to never miss an opportunity to share the Good News in this article.

Persevere! (Study!)

"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord the righteous Judge, will award unto me on that day." - Paul (2 Timothy 4:7-8)

People in the academe and the "intellectual" fields honor God with the minds He gave them. That's a double, even triple whammy for me: I'm a university teacher, a graduate student, and a Sunday school teacher. But like any other divine appointment, it is God who enables those He calls. I may get tired sometimes, but the feelings of fulfillment and living out your purpose are well worth it.

I've been plagued by discouragement many times: from people, failure, and distractions. If this were a race, I've stumbled, fallen, and run off course. But God simply encourages us to just get back on track:

"Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air. No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize." - Paul (1 Corinthians 9:24-27)

Just keep at it. The more steps we take in the right direction, the more empowered we feel, and the more encouraged we are to finish the race.

Persevere! And if you're a student: Study Hard and Study Well! :)

My solid ground

This is the Star Frisbee, perhaps the craziest ride in Star City.

https://twitter.com/iamglezjvn1/

(Yes, those are legs dangling as the pendulum swings and rotates.)

This is me on the Star Frisbee.

Just to be clear, that is not a smile --- that is a grimace of intense fear and psychological pain. The horror of it all in multiple angles.

As I was mercilessly thrown back and forth,
I was processing how in the world I got there,
barely able to breathe in (and gasp out "LORD!")
when the ride braces for the next swing.
Realizing there's no escape and I just have to ride it out,
I told myself, "Well, nobody died from this yet, so I should be okay."

I did get out alive; a proud survivor but with no plans of returning, thank you very much.

Just like 2012.

The year I turned 30 was the craziest ride ever, wilder than all the past years combined. Beliefs were turned upside down. Boundaries were formed and reformed. Principles were challenged. Priorities were refined. All of a sudden, God gave me maturity, self-control, security and peace.
I was shaken, I was strengthened. And yet through it all, my God remains the same. He is changing me --- improving, pruning, developing. As for Himself, He really can't improve on perfection now, can He?

Our God is the one stable and constant Presence in the universe. He is terra firma: solid ground. His Word does not change even when our understanding of it does. His gifts remain with us even when we forget about them, or ignore or misuse them. Most importantly, He is with us, always, period.

When the Star Frisbee of Life tosses me wildly back and forth, I will put my trust in what is secure. That ride is ultimately anchored on the ground; rocky circumstances ultimately answer to God Himself. I'll place my hope in my terra firma: enduring dangling in mid-air by remembering what the ground feels like... and making sure I get to touch base (literally get grounded) as much as possible.

Tempted much? Some reminders

http://www.blessedisthekingdom.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/temptation_575.jpg
http://www.blessedisthekingdom.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/temptation_575.jpg

These days I'm very tempted. And I fall, fall, and fall.

Reminders from His Word:

"No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.”
 (1 Corinthians 10:13–14)

"Do not give the devil a foothold."
(Ephesians 4:27)

"When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death."(James 1:13-15)

There's also a very good discussion here: "10 Temptation Truths"

God bless you, and God bless me. Gotta claim that. And look to Him, first and foremost, once again.

seek You and be secure

http://www.mamamia.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/holding-hands-380x252.jpg

Just read this (Zephaniah 3:16-17):

Jerusalem will be told:

"Don't be afraid.
Dear Zion,
don't despair.

Your GOD is present among you,
a strong warrior there to save you.

Happy to have you back,
He'll calm you with His love
and delight you with His songs."

Security. ♥

I am secure because God already loves me.

I have self issues, career issues, relationship issues. But knowing and remembering that God already prepared good for me, already chose me, already died and rose again for me... How petty my issues become!

It's funny that when I realize how unworthy I am (still not done with that thing or this concern)

... because I get to appreciate how GREAT God is, and His love for me,

... I'm all the more empowered to be worthy for Him.

Looking at one's self is depressing indeed. We have ideals for perfection but oh, how far off we are.

But let us look to God, Whose arm is already stretched out toward us. The Way, The Truth, The Life, Who already paid the ultimate price so we can live the full life with Him.

I have so many flaws and faults. But thank God, Who already loves me.

I'll end with this text message from a co-teacher :)

One day you were going to cross a bridge with God. You were so scared so you told Him:

"Can I hold Your hand so I won't fall off?"

He replied:

"No, My child. I'll be the one to hold you."

You asked, "What's the difference?"

God replied:

"There's a big difference. If you hold on to me, something might happen and you might let go of Me.

"But if  I hold you, I will never let go."

Who's still insecure among us? ;)

The Enduring Schoolgirl's Prayer

"Strength! Courage!"
     --- God to Joshua

"When I was an infant... I gurgled and cooed like any infant.
When I grew up, I left those infant ways for good."
     --- Paul to the Corinthians

"Make sure you don't take things for granted
and go slack in working for the common good;
share what you have with others.
God takes particular pleasure in acts of worship --- a different kind of 'sacrifice' ---
that take place in kitchen and workplace and on the streets."
     --- Letter to the Hebrews

I'm happy to be grown up and all, but there's one thing I do miss from my childhood days: that RUSH to get my schoolwork done. Believe it or not, there was a time I finished my homework before I reached home. 8-D

Now, I'm not like that anymore. Which is why I'm still a schoolgirl.

So my prayer for this season is to just do it. Sit down and finish *it* already.

Yes, wisdom ultimately comes from God, and there are other things I also have to do, but...
  • I pray for the courage to face my thesis :) ;
  • I pray for the endurance to go on even when I'm discouraged, afraid, lazy, busy, distracted, and whatever excuse I can come up with;
  • I pray for motivation, even enjoyment, just like in those grade school days;
  • I pray for the endurance even when I'm not motivated nor enjoying what I'm doing.

Hay, Lord. :)  I don't want to be a schoolgirl anymore --- I want to be more mature, responsible, and to graduate already...

But I do miss that get-that-schoolwork-done attitude. And that giddy-as-a-schoolgirl feeling of accomplishment ♥  Let's go Lord!

Not there yet? Follow on.

An encouragement from the great John Wesley. Do not fret because of what is not yet, but be happy in trust that He will act on what He promised.

Follow on in Faith

"Imitate those who through faith and patience inherit the promises."
- Hebrews 6:12

Have you received a good hope of God's promise to be created anew in His image? Have you a strong consolation through grace that He will perform it? Be no more weary or faint in your mind, but follow on till you attain.

If you thus "taste of the good word and of the powers of the world to come," you will not murmur against God that you are not yet qualified for the inheritance of the saints. Instead of repining at your not being wholly delivered, you will praise God for thus far delivering you.

You will magnify God for what He has already done and take it as an "earnest," a down payment, of what He will do. You will not fret against Him because you are not yet renewed but bless Him that you shall be. Because now your salvation from all sin is "nearer than when you first believed."

Instead of uselessly tormenting yourself because the time is not fully come, you will calmly and quietly wait for it, knowing "it will come, and will not tarry."

You may yet cheerfully endure the burden of sin that still remains in you, because it will not always remain. Yet a little while, and it shall be entirely gone.

Wait the Lord's leisure; be strong, and He shall comfort your heart. Only put your trust in the Lord.

This is taken from John Wesley's Sermon XXXVII: Satan's Devices, which was reprinted in "Renew my Heart", a devotional collection.

Be true to your song

Let me remember my song in the night;
let me meditate in my heart.
(Psalm 77:6)

Leave me alone with my song
by Colin Rowe

When there's meaning in the music,
And music in the words,
A song can set the heart at rest
It need not even be the best
Of songs.
As long as it belongs to you alone.

A song is all you need, boy,
The rest is for the birds,
But all the birds have songs of their own
From the highest and mightiest, holiest bird
To the shiest and grubbiest lowliest bird
Each has his own inner song
And that's why I know it's all wrong
That I'm walking away from the song
That is mine ---

I bought  "Tell No Man" by Adela Rogers St. Johns at a secondhand store, not knowing how much it would resonate in my life as a Christ-follower --- then, as a new believer, and now, as a tired person in the world.
The song above is from a fictional character in a fictional story, but how much can you and I relate? Will we conform to the world and end up as mere shadows and echoes... or will we be true to who we are --- who He destined us to be?

But why doesn't that happen to *me*?

In the Bible, or perhaps on TV, or movies, or from your friends, you'd hear of awesome miracles, superhuman tests, or the Holy of Holies or His angels personally interfering in the affairs of man.

"But how come those things don't happen to me?"

Let's make do with what we have;
Let's act on what we do know.

Let's start with the basics. The Bible says spiritual infants need "pure spiritual milk".

The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.
- Deuteronomy 29:29

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.
- 2 Timothy 3:16-17

Following God, walking with Him... every step is amazing. We get transformed "from glory to glory", growing to be "more like Christ" as we go along. Just enjoy the ride, relish the process. The wonderful God will do wonderful things with the life yielded to Him. :)

Good Job Passing the Test

Too much suffering? The unfairness of it all? Found something good only to see it fade away?

Naked I came from my mother's womb,
and naked shall I return.
The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away;
blessed be the name of the LORD.
- Job 1:21

Shall we receive good from God,
and shall we not receive evil?
- Job 2:10b

The commentary of my ESV Bible says that the book of Job contains:
- God's loving sovereignty
- the supremacy of divine wisdom over human wisdom
- Believing that God is good despite the apparent evidence to the contrary, Job rested in faith alone.
- I know that my Redeemer lives (Job 19:25).

Centuries after Job prevailed over his test of faith, the apostle James explains:

Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.
Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am being tempted by God," for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.
Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.

- James 1:12-17

Devil tactics

Do you find yourself doing too much? ... too little?

If Satan can't scare you,
he'll try to distract you.

Be wise. :) And, eyes on the prize. :)

"I know your works.
Behold, I have set before you an open door, which no one is able to shut.
I know that you have but little power, and yet you have kept My word and have not denied My name...
Because you have kept My word about patient endurance,
I will keep you from the hour of trial that is coming on the whole world,
to try those who dwell on the earth.
I am coming soon.
Hold fast to what you have,
so that no one may seize your crown.
The one who conquers, I will make him a pillar in the temple of My God."
- Revelation 3:8,10-12a

"Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial
because, having stood the test,
that person will receive the crown of life
that the Lord has promised to those who love him."
- James 1:12

"Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God."
- Hebrews 12:1-2

For this season, Faithfulness

The word for this season is FAITHFULNESS.

"You may rely on the Lord, but may He rely on you?" (Elizabeth George)

(Ouch!)

Faithfulness means being steadfast regardless of circumstances and emotions.

It also means being full of faith in the One who is empowering you to do what He is calling you to do. :)

Steadfast love? Yes and yes.

This month has been *such* an emotional roller coaster.

(Side comment: I can't even say that this month has been the "most emotional ever"... which leads me to realize just how emotional I am. And I'm in an intellectual field. I'm adjusting still, but the more parts of me alive, the better, I say. :)  )

Two weeks ago, tired and discouraged, I was blessed with, in rapid succession:

1. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Chapter 1.
  • I finally got to start at the very beginning. Impatient, selective me previously just read and re-read the victorious glorious parts :D
  • "It is scarcely wise when bringing the news of the death of his heir to a mighty lord to speak over much of the coming of one who will, if he comes, claim the kingship. Is that enough?" - Gandalf
    "Kingship?" said Pippin amazed.

2. Serendipity
  • Like the lovers in the movie, it's been a long time since I last saw this. It's a most welcome encouragement to hear that all will be well.
  • "If we are to live life in harmony with the universe, we must all possess a powerful faith in what the ancients used to call "fatum", what we currently refer to as destiny."
  • "You know the Greeks didn't write obituaries. They only asked one question after a man died: 'Did he have passion?'"
  • "I think we make our own decisions, I just think that fate sends us little signs, and it's how we read the signs that determines whether we're happy or not."
  • "Life is not merely a series of meaningless accidents or coincidences. Uh-uh. But rather, its a tapestry of events that culminate in an exquisite, sublime plan."
  • "When love feels like magic, it's called Destiny. When destiny has a sense of humor, It's called Serendipity."

3. Slumdog Millionaire
  • Simply a masterpiece. :) Pursue good in the good, righteous way. Pursue love, seeking what's best for the beloved. Take care not to treat money as a god, and God will provide for you.
  • "I know I have sinned. Forgive me." - Salim
  • "God is great." - Salim
  • "So are you ready for the final question for 20 million rupees?" - host
"No, but maybe it's written, no?" - Jamal
  • "I thought we would meet only in death." - Latika
"This is our destiny." - Jamal

Last week:

The LORD your God is with you,
       He is mighty to save.
He will take great delight in you,
He will quiet you with his love,
He will rejoice over you with singing.
- Zephaniah 3:17

And this week:

One thing God has spoken,
two things have I heard:
that You, O God, are strong,
and that You, O Lord, are loving.

- Psalm 62:11-12

My heart can rest, for it is in the right place.  :)

"Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.

...Apart from me you can do nothing.

...As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father's commands and remain in his love." ---John 15:4,5b,9-10,12

THIS LOVE
by LeAnn Rimes

Here in the free land there are detours on the gravel roads
Sometimes it feels like there's just no right way to go
There'll be times you'll go crazy
And times you'll break down
Always something that stands in your way

Just keep your eyes on Me
Never lose sight of Me
This love
Nothing can come between us
When we're following
This love
This love

Everybody is bound to feel lost now and then
But I'll be the one babe, that'll be there for you 'til the end
Through good days and bad
The ups and the downs
Don't you ever let go of your dreams

Just keep your eyes on Me
Never lose sight of Me
This love
Nothing can come between us
When we're following
This love
This love...

I'll be your northern star
When everything's dark I will shine for you
Shine for you...

Just keep your eyes on Me
Never lose sight of Me
This love
Nothing can come between us
When we're following
This love
This love...

Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. --- Philippians 3:12-14

Drew Baylor (Orlando Bloom): In that moment, I knew success, not greatness, was the only god the world served.

Claire Colburn (Kirsten Dunst): So you failed. Alright you really failed. You failed. You failed. You failed. You failed. You failed. You failed. You failed. You failed. You failed. You failed. You failed. You failed. You think I care about that? I do understand. You wanna be really great? Then have the courage to fail big and stick around. Make them wonder why you're still smiling.

Drew Baylor: No true fiasco ever began as a quest for mere adequacy. A motto of the British Special Air Force is: 'Those who risk, win.' A single green vine shoot is able to grow through cement. The Pacific Northwestern salmon beats itself bloody on its quest to travel hundreds of miles upstream against the current, with a single purpose --- sex of course --- but also...life.

Jake Shuttlesworth: Number one, why you gotta use this kinda language? What you some kinda heathen now? You don't make no mistakes? You be out here shootin', but you don't miss no shots ever? EVER? People make mistakes! People veer off the path! God forgives them!
Jesus Shuttlesworth: Has God forgiven you for killing my mother?
Jake Shuttlesworth: I pray that He has, son. I believe He has. When will you?

i hope you guys and gals get to catch these movies created from the heart by their respective, er, creators :) (i learned a LOT from them, even if i just caught the last parts!)

Ah, Lord. Thinking about movies written and directed by me leaves me all swooning and daydreaming...and not able to focus on my current tasks. *tsk tsk!* :D

Since my life is supposedly written and directed by (in my cool bro's words) The Great One, then i should be getting back to work :) (which i love to do too, by the way!)

thank You for giving me the best day of my life

THANK YOU
by Dido

My tea's gone cold, I'm wondering why
I got out of bed at all
The morning rain clouds up my window
and I can't see at all
And even if I could it'd all be grey,
but Your picture on my wall
It reminds me that it's not so bad,
it's not so bad

I drank too much last night, got bills to pay,
my head just feels in pain
I missed the bus and there'll be hell today,
I'm late for work again
And even if I'm there, they'll all imply
that I might not last the day
And then You call me and it's not so bad, it's not so bad and

I want to thank You
for giving me the best day of my life
Oh just to be with You
is having the best day of my life

Push the door, I'm home at last
and I'm soaking through and through
Then You hand me a towel
and all I see is You
And even if my house falls down,
I wouldn't have a clue Because You're near me and
I want to thank You

for giving me the best day of my life
Oh just to be with You
is having the best day of my life
