The person, not the package

Jesus loved the rich young man.
Not his riches.
Not his talents, which could be of great use to the kingdom
Not his credentials, his connections,
nor power nor possessions.

Jesus loved him.
But he loved his riches.

And Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him,
"You lack one thing:
go, sell all that you have and give to the poor,
and you will have treasure in heaven,
and come, follow Me."
Disheartened by the saying, he went away sorrowful,
for he had great possessions.
(Mark 10:21-22)

Another of the disciples said to Him,
"Lord, let me first go and bury my father."
And Jesus said to him,
"Follow Me, and leave the dead to bury their own dead."
(Matthew 8:21-22)

Who --- or what --- do we love the most?
