Feb 4 2013

This day is important to me because:

  • For the first time, I sent someone (two students) to the Disciplinary Office for cheating. Verbal reminders and personal confrontations are not enough --- people (myself included) don't learn until we reap the consequences of our actions. "God disciplines those He loves" (Hebrews), and so should we.

  •  For the first time in over a year, I returned to our research lab. Not much has changed there, it seems, but I feel I've changed much. What I couldn't do before, I could do now. "I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength." (Philippians)

  • For the first time in weeks, I chose to go home early (as in, the sun hasn't set yet). For a long time I needed to get my energy level up; now that it's up, I need to get going. I'm distinguishing between goals (ex: graduate) and means (ex: dance). "Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, making the most of your time, because the days are evil. So then do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is." (Ephesians)

  • I'm using a laptop given to me by my uncle and aunt, and I'll be using a cell phone I "inherited" from my brother. Very good gadgets that I didn't lift a finger to get. "He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all -- how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?" (Romans)

Plus there are the everyday (but always special) blessings like my family, a fulfilling job, supportive friends, enough finances and yummy food. Thank You, thank You.

"In everything, give thanks." (1 Thessalonians)

:) :)

(Hey! And the day isn't even done yet ;) )

Resurrect!

Yesterday was Easter Sunday. People celebrated the resurrection of Jesus in different ways.

As for me...

  • reformatted two computers (if you know me, you know this is a major issue)
  • reclaimed leadership of our small group/Bible study -- thank You for the growth in quality and quantity. Every person is a blessing; every story helps us grow. ♥
  • returned (slowly but surely) to Kids' Church ;) (If anything balances out teaching college students on weekdays, this would be it.)
  • released, finally, all the bitterness and hatred, followed by a release of grace and forgiveness. This is my miracle of miracles.
  • reminded again and again to confess my sins and bring them to light. Ask for help and for accountability. Relieved now.
  • restored and redeemed, even if yet in theory, God's plans and purposes for me. It's not my job to understand everything: I'm not God and I just act on the little that I do know. And I'm remembering to be thankful because His revelations are supposed to help and guide and remove confusion instead of adding to it. And I'm remembering that many seasons of frustration over delayed and denied *stuff* are directly due to my own *issues*. C'mon Lord. I claim Your power :)
  • reminded that it's more blessed to give than to receive. :) This is no empty do-gooder push phrase; it's a tried and tested truth.
  • reminded to "do ALL for the glory of God". But this time, it finally sank in. Finally finally.
  • remembering that Jesus ordered a direct command to NOT WORRY. Repeat ...

My body is supposed to be tired but my spirit is refreshed and renewed. :)

"You must be born again," Jesus said. The decision to accept Christ can literally be made in an instant, but it is a commitment that needs renewing and remembering every once in a while. And the more we walk with God, the more we understand how great and holy and wonderful He is, and how undeserving yet blessed we are that He loves us... How far we are from Him and yet how powerfully He can change us if we just let Him.

And, so, I get born again, and again and again.

And my soul is resting in peace while I'm being brought to life more and more.

Resurrect!

But why doesn't that happen to *me*?

In the Bible, or perhaps on TV, or movies, or from your friends, you'd hear of awesome miracles, superhuman tests, or the Holy of Holies or His angels personally interfering in the affairs of man.

"But how come those things don't happen to me?"

Let's make do with what we have;
Let's act on what we do know.

Let's start with the basics. The Bible says spiritual infants need "pure spiritual milk".

The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.
- Deuteronomy 29:29

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.
- 2 Timothy 3:16-17

Following God, walking with Him... every step is amazing. We get transformed "from glory to glory", growing to be "more like Christ" as we go along. Just enjoy the ride, relish the process. The wonderful God will do wonderful things with the life yielded to Him. :)

Amazing

Amazing
by Aerosmith

I kept the right ones out
And let the wrong ones in
Had an angel of mercy
To see me through all my sins
There were times in my life
When I was goin' insane
Tryin' to walk through the pain

And when I lost my grip
And I hit the floor
Yeah, I thought I could leave
But couldn't get out the door
I was so sick n' tired
Of livin' a lie
I was wishing that I would die

It's amazing
With the blink of an eye
You finally see the light
Oh it's amazing
When the moment arrives
You know you'll be alright
Yeah it's amazing
And I'm saying a prayer
For the desperate hearts tonight

That one last shot's a Permanent Vacation
And a how high can you fly with broken wings
Life's a journey - not a destination
And I just can't tell just what tomorrow brings

You have to learn to crawl
Before you learn to walk
But I just couldn't listen
To all that righteous talk oh yeah
I was out on the street
Just tryin' to survive
Scratchin' to stay alive

It's amazing
With the blink of an eye
You finally see the light
Oh it's amazing
When the moment arrives
That you know you'll be alright
Oh it's amazing
And I'm saying a prayer
For the desperate hearts tonight

"So, from all of us at Aerosmith
To all of you out there, wherever you are.
Remember- the light at the end of the tunnel
May be you. Goodnight!"

No miracles needed?

"God never wrought miracles to convince atheism,
because His ordinary works convince it."

If this 'ho' can be made holy, then there is hope

He has made everything beautiful in His time;
also He has set eternity in their heart,
so that no man can find out the work that God makes from the beginning to the end.

(Ecclesiastes 3:11)

When i was young, i thought, "Oh, alright already, i'm a bad girl. i might as well do it 'excellently' because there's no chance of me being a saint, right?"

Right?

Now i see:

Yes, i'm a sinner,

But i can receive God's justice and forgiveness

(the penalty is death, but God took our place, if we let Him)

And i can claim God's power

(to desire and develop godliness)

And encounter God's very presence

(ask and you shall receive)

Through Him and only Him

we can be bold enough to seek Him

Through Him and only Him

we can be worthy enough to face Him

Through Him and only Him

we can be bold enough and worthy enough to represent Him

And show that if this 'ho can be made holy

Then there really is a God,

all-powerful and all-wise

all-just and all-loving

And there is hope for all of us.

Don't be afraid or ashamed and don't be discouraged.
You won't be disappointed.

Forget how sinful you were when you were young;
stop feeling ashamed for being left a widow.

The LORD All-Powerful, the Holy God of Israel, rules all the earth.
He is your Creator and husband, and he will rescue you.

You were like a young wife,
brokenhearted and crying because her husband had divorced her.
But the LORD your God says, "I am taking you back!

"I rejected you for a while,
but with love and tenderness I will embrace you again.

"For a while, I turned away in furious anger.
Now I will have mercy and love you forever!

"I, your protector and LORD, make this promise."

(Isaiah 54:4-8)

i am preserved by grace

i am preserved, protected, restored, and blessed...because God is gracious to me. It is not because i'm a good girl --- it's in spite of, and yet also because of, the fact that i was the naughtiest, most rotten of the lot.

God showed me His grace --- His goodness that I far from deserved, so that others can see that His love is unconditional. And that there is hope for all of us :)

From Romans 11:2-6
:

God did not reject His people, whom He foreknew.

Don't you know what the Scripture says in the passage about Elijah --- how he appealed to God against Israel: "Lord, they have killed Your prophets and torn down Your altars; I am the only one left, and they are trying to kill me"?

And what was God's answer to him?

"I have reserved for Myself seven thousand who have not bowed the knee to Baal."

So too, at the present time there is a remnant chosen by grace.

And if by grace, then it is no longer by works; if it were, grace would no longer be grace.

i am full of grace

Amazing because nobody, especially myself, would expect it. Amazing, too, because just the night before i wrote this down, i thought i was most wretched, even worse than i have ever been...

But that's exactly what grace is. God delights to show His goodness by loving the most undeserved. God delights to show His wisdom by teaching the most hard-headed and slow-witted. So that all men will be drawn to Him.

Isaiah boldly says,
"I was found by those who did not seek Me;
I revealed Myself to those who did not ask for Me."
--- Isaiah 65:1; Romans 10:20

need to do to do all else

Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, you are looking for Me, not because you saw miraculous signs but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. On Him God the Father has placed His seal of approval."

Then they asked him, "What must we do to do the works God requires?"

Jesus answered, "The work of God is this: to believe in the one He has sent."

God unrestricted in music, 2: rock and healing :)

Thanks to Reuters :)

BAND TRIES TO HEAL KASHMIR WOUNDS WITH ROCK MUSIC
By Sheikh Mushtaq
Sun Aug 12, 2007 4:03AM EDT

SRINAGAR, India (Reuters) - The sound of a new rock band is soothing Kashmir which has been blighted by years of violence and a ban on entertainment by se
paratist Muslim guerrillas.

In a region where the boom of guns and bombs has drowned out all sounds for almost 20 years, a cacophony of melodies from guitar, drums and electric keyboards is now sweeping Kashmir's war-weary youngsters with a message of love and peace.

"Immersion", a five-member rock band that also includes a woman, says the purpose of its music is to try to erase the scars and trauma of young Kashmiris.

"They have suffered a lot and they are hungry for entertainment," Amit Wanchoo, the band's 28-year-old lyricist, told Reuters. "We are trying to heal their wounds."

Every word of pain and suffering Wanchoo pens is dipped in the blood of his own family -- his grandfather, a prominent social worker, was shot dead by separatist militants in 1992.

The revolt has killed tens of thousands of people since 1989 and rape and torture have become a way of life.

Any distraction from the violence was blocked by a separatist ban on cinema, music and concerts in a region with great natural beauty that once provided romantic settings for Bollywood films.

But with time, the militants' hold over daily life has lif
ted, a single cinema has reopened, traditional theatre and music are being revived and alcohol is available in a few shops.

"There was no source of entertainment, so we decided to form a music group which will entertain youth who grew up with violence," said keyboard player Bilal Matta.

The band, which began performing last year, says initially it faced threats, but accompanying a fall in violence now more people attend their shows.

Last month, hundreds of Kashmiri youths swayed to the band's music. One of the songs said: "We pray to God for a soothing rain of happiness."

Overall violence has ebbed in Kashmir since India and Pakistan, which claim the region in full and rule in parts, began a peace process in 2004, officials say.

However, people are still killed in daily firefights and occasional attacks by suspected militants.

Encouraged by the response, the multi-lingual band -- which performs in English, Hindi, Urdu and Punjabi -- hopes to turn professional soon. The band members now hold shows in between doing odd jobs.

"They can mesmerize everyone, the whole audience listens to their music with rapt attention," Mohammad Saqlain, an "Immersion" fan, said.

The band, its members mostly dressed in jeans, T-shirts and overcoats, performs for NGOs, government agencies and charities. Only recently they began paid shows.

"We have also organized concerts to entertain and help orphans, the poor and the ailing," said Mahmmeet Syed, the band's only female singer.

Saying that they are "aiming very high", King Paul, the lead guitarist, strings his instrument before strumming to his favorite song -- "Will change the picture of the world, we the youngsters of Kashmir."

our daily bread

i look to my left. hung on the wall beside me was a little poster which says:

The Lord Provides

Look at the birds...

they do not sow
or reap or store away
in barns, and yet your
heavenly Father feeds them ---

Are you not much
more valuable than they?

Matthew 6:26

i look to my right. there was a piece of paper on which was written:

"But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own."
Matthew 6:33-34

Father, give us today our daily bread.

i haven't really thought much about provisions --- ever --- until these past couple of months. i don't mean to brag but things just happened to fall on my lap. so i took God's blessings for granted, in the same way that we take for granted the sunrise in the morning and our waking up every day.

[just because something happens with absolute periodicity [translation: regularity] in the past --- is NO GUARANTEE about the future. any scientist should be able to tell us that ONE SINGLE instance is enough to DISPROVE an entire, centuries-held "law". but we scientists take things for granted ourselves! we must have a healthy balance between confidence ("faith") and skepticism :) ]

but now i'm going to China (read here) as a missionary for two weeks. that changes everything.
  • i need WAY more than my current salary can handle.
  • i get to share about God and how we need Him in our lives, WAY before i leave the shores of the Philippines
  • i need WAY more of God. WAY more faith that He will come through for me. WAY more trust and dependence on Him; not in what i can do nor the (seeming) randomness or luck of everyday life.
but it's happening. it's all coming to pass, right in front of my eyes.

i will go to China.

as God's bearer of His Good News!

twice even! (read here.)

i will go. in His Name! :)

how liberating is that. it's not about me but about Him. i'm just the messenger. :D

how humbling is that. it's not about me but about Him. i'm just the messenger. :D

right now i'm trusting God for more than my daily bread.

because it's not for me anymore. it stopped being about me a long time ago :)

it's now for His glory, and for the sake of my brothers and sisters who have yet to hear or have yet to welcome God into their hearts.

and if i have been blessed before, what more now, when i am right smack in the center of His will and purposes for me?

i KNOW You will provide for me Lord. the only question is how :) but in any case, there is a time for everything. a time to be still and a time to act. You have said, "Be still and know that I am God." (Psalm 46:10) Now, i will act, but all the more knowing that You are God. it is You who will crush mountains so i can pass through. it is You who will soften hearts so i can get through :) still, all for You :)

God the Holy Spirit just reminded me of something :) there's this line that comes before asking for our daily bread :) (see the complete prayer in the Gospels of Luke or Matthew.)

Holy be Your name,
Your kingdom come,
Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

amen. :)

it's definitely WAY more about my daily bread now.

:)

the most powerful show of power

It is not our sufficiency that demonstrates God's power;
it is our weakness.

God's strength is perfected in our weakness
and prayer shows our need for the Spirit's empowering presence.

careful; might be false prophets…

Dear friends, don’t believe everyone who claims to have the Spirit of God. Test them all to find out if they really do come from God. Many false prophets have already gone out into the world, and you can know which ones come from God. His Spirit says that Jesus Christ had a truly human body. But when someone doesn’t say this about Jesus, you know that person has a spirit that doesn’t come from God and is the enemy of Christ. You knew that this enemy was coming into the world and now is already here. -- 1 John 4:1-3

You can tell God’s children from the devil’s children, because those who belong to the devil refuse to do right or to love each other. –- 1 John 3:10

Your prophets deceived you
with false visions
and lying messages--
they should have warned you
to leave your sins
and be saved from disaster.
-- Lamentations 2:14

Those prophets refuse to be honest. They tell my people there will be peace, even though there's no peace to be found. They are like workers who think they can fix a shaky wall by covering it with paint. -- Ezekiel 13:10

Watch out for false prophets! They dress up like sheep, but inside they are wolves who have come to attack you. -- Matthew 7:15

You can tell what a tree is like by the fruit it produces. You cannot pick figs or grapes from thornbushes. Good people do good things because of the good in their hearts. Bad people do bad things because of the evil in their hearts. Your words show what is in your heart. -- Luke 6:43-45

False messiahs and false prophets will come and work great miracles and signs. They will even try to fool God's chosen ones. -- Matthew 24:24, Mark 13:22

You are in for trouble when everyone says good things about you. That is what your own people said about those prophets who told lies. -- Luke 6:26

Sometimes false prophets spoke to the people of Israel. False teachers will also sneak in and speak harmful lies to you. But these teachers don't really belong to the Master who paid a great price for them, and they will quickly destroy themselves. -- 2 Peter 2:1

Many liars have gone out into the world. These deceitful liars are saying that Jesus Christ did not have a truly human body. But they are liars and the enemies of Christ. So be sure not to lose what we have worked for. If you do, you won't be given your full reward. -- 2 John 7-8

=====================================================================

to safeguard against false prophets:
Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true. -- Acts 17:11

hail to the God of second chances (and third, and fourth...)

I was personally unknown to the churches of Judea that are in Christ. They only heard the report: "The man who formerly persecuted us is now preaching the faith he once tried to destroy."
And they praised God because of me.

there's something about marriage...

THIS (first) intro is written by me, teci. (the message was from a friend.)
That's right, there's something about marriage. It's GOD. GOD is the one you promise everything to: to give your very life for this other person, in the small and in the big things. you're promising a lifetime of commitment and love for this other person, but you're making that promise to God and ask His help for you to keep that promise. :)
(end teci's intro)

--------------------------------------------------------------

Eduardo Calasanz was a student at the Ateneo Manila University, Philippines, where he had Father Ferriols as professor. Father Ferriols, at that time was the Philosophy department head.

Currently he still teaches Philosophy for graduating college students in Ateneo. Father Ferriols has been very popular for his mind opening and enriching classes but was also notorious for the grades he gives. Still people took his classes for the learning and deep insight they take home with them every day (if only they could do something about the grades...)

Anyway, come grade giving time, (Ateneo has letter grading systems, the highest being an A, lowest at D, with F for flunk), Fr. Ferriols had this long discussion with the registrar people because he wanted to give Calasanz an A+. Either that or he doesn't teach at all...Calasanz got his A+.
Read the paper below to find out why.

Partners and Marriage
by Eduardo Jose E. Calasanz

I have never met a man who didn't want to be loved. But I have seldom met a man who didn't fear marriage. Something about the closure seems constricting, not enabling. Marriage seems easier to understand for what it cuts out of our lives than for what it makes possible within our lives. When I was younger this fear immobilized me. I did not want to make a mistake. I saw my friends get married for reasons of social acceptability, or sexual fever, or just because they thought it was the logical thing to do. Then I watched, as they and their partners became embittered and petty in their dealings with each other. I looked at older couples and saw, at best, mutual toleration of each other. I imagined a lifetime of loveless nights and bickering and could not imagine subjecting myself or someone else to such a fate.

And yet, on rare occasions, I would see old couples who somehow seemed to glow in each other's presence. They seemed really in love, not just dependent upon each other and tolerant of each other's foibles. It was an astounding sight, and it seemed impossible. How, I asked myself, can they have survived so many years of sameness, so much irritation at the other's habits? What keeps love alive in them, when most of us seem unable to even stay together, much less love each other? The central secret seems to be in choosing well. There is something to the claim of fundamental compatibility. Good people can create a bad relationship, even though they both dearly want the relationship to succeed. It is important to find someone with whom you can create a good relationship from the outset. Unfortunately, it is hard to see clearly in the early stages.

Sexual hunger draws you to each other and colors the way you see yourselves together. It blinds you to the thousands of little things by which relationships eventually survive or fail. You need to find a way to see beyond this initial overwhelming sexual fascination. Some people choose to involve themselves sexually and ride out the most heated period of sexual attraction in order to see what is on the other side. This can work, but it can also leave a trail of wounded hearts. Others deny the sexual side altogether in an attempt to get to know each other apart from their sexuality. But they cannot see clearly, because the presence of unfulfilled sexual desire looms so large that it keeps them from having any normal perception of what life would be like together. The truly lucky people are the ones who manage to become long-time friends before they realize they are attracted to each other. They get to know each other's laughs, passions, sadness, and fears. They see each other at their worst and at their best. They share time together before they get swept into the entangling intimacy of their sexuality.

This is the ideal, but not often possible. If you fall under the spell of your sexual attraction immediately, you need to look beyond it for other keys to compatibility. One of these is laughter. Laughter tells you how much you will enjoy each other's company over the long term. If your laughter together is good and healthy, and not at the expense of others, then you have a healthy relationship to the world. Laughter is the child of surprise. If you can make each other laugh, you can always surprise each other. And if you can always surprise each other, you can always keep the world around you new. Beware of a relationship in which there is no laughter. Even the most intimate relationships based only on seriousness have a tendency to turn sour. Over time, sharing a common serious viewpoint on the world tends to turn you against those who do not share the same viewpoint, and your relationship can become based on being critical together.

After laughter, look for a partner who deals with the world in a way you respect. When two people first get together, they tend to see their relationship as existing only in the space between the two of them. They find each other endlessly fascinating, and the overwhelming power of the emotions they are sharing obscures the outside world. As the relationship ages and grows, the outside world becomes important again. If your partner treats people or circumstances in a way you can't accept, you will inevitably come to grief. Look at the way she cares for others and deals with the daily affairs of life. If that makes you love her more, your love will grow. If it does not, be careful . If you do not respect the way you each deal with the world around you, eventually the two of you will not respect each other.

Look also at how your partner confronts the mysteries of life. We live on the cusp of poetry and practicality, and the real life of the heart resides in the poetic. If one of you is deeply affected by the mystery of the unseen in life and relationships, while the other is drawn only to the literal and the practical, you must take care that the distance doesnt become an unbridgeable gap that leaves you each feeling isolated and misunderstood. There are many other keys, but you must find them by ourself. We all have unchangeable parts of our hearts that we will not betray and private commitments to a vision of life that we will not deny. If you fall in love with someone who cannot nourish those inviolable parts of you, or if you cannot nourish them in her, you will find yourselves growing further apart until you live in separate worlds where you share the business of life, but never touch each other where the heart lives and dreams. From there it is only a small leap to the cataloging of petty hurts and daily failures that leaves so many couples bitter and unsatisfied with their mates.

So choose carefully and well. If you do, you will have chosen a partner with whom you can grow, and then the real miracle of marriage can take place in your hearts. I pick my words carefully when I speak of a miracle. But I think it is not too strong a word. There is a miracle in marriage. It is called transformation. Transformation is one of the most common events of nature. The seed becomes the flower. The cocoon becomes the butterfly. Winter becomes spring and love becomes a child. We never question these, because we see them around us every day. To us they are not miracles, though if we did not know them they would be impossible to believe. Marriage is a transformation we choose to make. Our love is planted like a seed, and in time it begins to flower. We cannot know the flower that will blossom, but we can be sure that a bloom will come. If you have chosen carefully and wisely, the bloom will be good. If you have chosen poorly or for the wrong reason, the bloom will be flawed. We are quite willing to accept the reality of negative transformation in a marriage. It was negative transformation that always had me terrified of the bitter marriages that I feared when I was younger. It never occurred to me to question the dark miracle that transformed love into harshness and bitterness. Yet I was unable to accept the possibility that the first heat of love could be transformed into something positive that was actually deeper and more meaningful than the heat of fresh passion. All I could believe in was the power of this passion and the fear that when it cooled I would be left with something lesser and bitter. But there is positive transformation as well. Like negative transformation, it results from a slow accretion of little things. But instead of death by a thousand blows, it is growth by a thousand touches of love. Two histories intermingle. Two separate beings, two separate presence, two separate consciousnesses come together and share a view of life that passes before them. They remain separate, but they also become one. There is an expansion of awareness, not a closure and a constriction, as I had once feared. This is not to say that there is not tension and there are not traps. Tension and traps are part of every choice of life, from celibate to monogamous to having multiple lovers. Each choice contains within it the lingering doubt that the road not taken somehow more fruitful and exciting, and each becomes dulled to the richness that it alone contains. But only marriage allows life to deepen and expand and be leavened by the knowledge that two have chosen, against all odds, to become one. Those who live together without marriage can know the pleasure of shared company, but there is a specific gravity in the marriage commitment that deepens that experience into something richer and more complex.

So do not fear marriage, just as you should not rush into it for the wrong reasons. It is an act of faith and it contains within it the power of transformation.

If you believe in your heart that you have found someone with whom you are able to grow, if you have sufficient faith that you can resist the endless attraction of the road not taken and the partner not chosen, if you have the strength of heart to embrace the cycles and seasons that your love will experience, then you may be ready to seek the miracle that marriage offers. If not, then wait. The easy grace of a marriage well made is worth your patience. When the time comes, a thousand flowers will bloom... endlessly.

in case i still don't get it...

there’s this movie about this series of books that reminds me of this other book. (ok, that sentence has got to be the most understated one i have ever written…)

anyway, you, dear reader, might probably have heard of the following words dozens of times…or not. but i hope something would speak to you, as the entire chapter has spoken to me in recent weeks. God, thank You for speaking to me through X-Men! (there! i said it! hahaha…)

====================================================
  • If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.

  • And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.

  • If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing.

  • Love is PATIENT.

  • Love is KIND.

  • Love DOES NOT ENVY.

  • Love DOES NOT BOAST.

  • Love is NOT ARROGANT.

  • Love is NOT RUDE.

  • Love DOES NOT INSIST ON ITS OWN WAY.

  • Love is NOT IRRITABLE.

  • Love is NOT RESENTFUL.

  • Love DOES NOT REJOICE AT WRONGDOING.

  • Love REJOICES WITH THE TRUTH.

  • Love BEARS ALL THINGS.

  • Love BELIEVES ALL THINGS.

  • Love HOPES ALL THINGS.

  • Love ENDURES ALL THINGS.

  • LOVE NEVER ENDS.

  • As for prophecies, they will pass away;
    as for tongues, they will cease;
as for knowledge, it will pass away.
For we know in part and we prophesy in part,
but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away.
  • When I was a child,
    I spoke like a child,
    I thought like a child,
    I reasoned like a child.
    When I became a [woman],
I [should!] give up childish ways.
  • For now we see in a mirror dimly,
but then [in the future] face to face.
    Now I know in part,
then [in the future] I shall know fully,
even as I have been fully known.
  • So now
    Faith,
    Hope,
    Love,
    abide, these three,
But the greatest of these is love.

Hope? Check.

Although for a season i really lost all hope.

Then i learned about God, and learned how to trust Him.

So i started to have faith. (Check.)

Then my hope returned. (Check.)

Love?

i cannot give what i do not have.
i now laugh because i used to do so much of what love is not (does NOT keep a record of wrongs, is NOT resentful, et cetera).
But my faith and hope rest completely on the God of love.
Hey everyone, be patient with me! (love is patient!) i’m still learning :D

apart

Apart from Him i can do nothing, He says (John 15:5).

Indeed, in the past weeks, i was mediocre at everything, or worse. i was having fits of temper around my family again. Half my class flunked their first, supposedly easiest, exam. i was not able to prepare well for the classes i was teaching, the Bible study group i was leading, the ministries i was joining, et cetera. it all culminated in a weekend-long sickness. (my very own Good Friday to Easter Sunday =) )

Deep down i knew i had to change; i had to stop. i had to pray. i stopped praying when i started doing my thesis. (whoa, that just sounds…wrong.) which means, i stopped praying when the year 2006 began. (so, so wrong.)

In my busy-ness and worry i kept talking to God at the back of my mind, or maybe just imagined talking to Him. But listening? And because a new schoolyear kicked off as i was still revising said thesis, i “could not” --- would not? did not? chose not? --- to listen.

We’ve all heard the saying, we’re given two ears and only one mouth so we can talk less and listen more.

James says, let every person be quick to hear and slow to speak (James 1:19).

More to the point, Mother Teresa says that when she prays to God, she is simply listening. And what would God be doing? You guessed it: God is listening as well.

Last Saturday (July 15, 2006) i had a meeting, a class, and a seminar to go to. (plus this science-fiction and fantasy convention held but once a year!) But i was too sick to even eat. (Yes, i was that sick.) And all of a sudden i was forced to examine my recent past. In spite of the endless movies and talk shows that paraded before my eyes that weekend, or maybe because of them, i realized anew how empty life had become without God --- without seeking, hearing, listening to His voice.

Especially for me, because i'm a writer --- nay, His writer: His own personal secretary on call 24 hours a day. (yay =) ) If i don’t hear His voice not only can i not do anything, i really am nothing.

For all my mistakes i'm glad i can learn from them. =) when everything falls apart, perhaps i’m apart from God. more than time management or teaching skills or anything else, when circumstances start putting me down, or when the least of these circumstances make me fearful and anxious, it’s really God’s presence that i need. =)

So what happened?

Within hours of requesting for His voice,
  • i got to write and testify for Him again (for others!)
  • i suddenly become an effective teacher, literally overnight!
  • i come home and relate well to my family.

But these are just good signs that He’s back in my life. Even without them, i’ll live. But i cannot live apart from God Himself, and i wouldn’t want to. His presence is more than one will ever need.

For those of you who still haven’t felt His presence, just ask. He promises that you will find. In the same way that i asked God for His presence and things literally started turning around, i just know that YOUR life will turn around too. =)
